The UnPunk Documents #1: I Used To Want To Be The Next Will Smith
Being a fan of Will Smith is one of the most unpunk things in the world. If anything this perspective highlights his greatness.
Back in my day (Argh! My age! My soul!), this made a lot of sense. Will Smith, The Fresh Prince, was the pinnacle of generational millennial envy. He won the first hip-hop Grammy as a rapper. He hooked up with Quincy Jones and made a the legendary Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He and Martin Lawrence pioneered two Black police officers working together in one movie with Bad Boys (1995).
After all of that, Will Smith returned to music and kicked off his "jiggy era." Fancy adult swagger, a new man-sized body, tales about "the hottest club in the city that was right on the beach", an L.L. Cool J level of sex appeal. Most of my generation loved Will Smith, and at the time, I wanted to be just like him.
This is one of the most UnPunk things I've ever wanted.
